This week, our Crestview Rockets Flag Football team hosted CHIME School and traveled to Valley School for two exciting matchups. Both games featured great effort on both sides of the ball, with our Rockets executing well offensively and defensively.

The Rockets came away with two impressive victories, defeating CHIME School 32–6 and Valley School 20–0!

Several players made their mark this week with touchdowns, interceptions, touchdown passes, and multiple receptions. A special shoutout to Eli L., Hendrix B., Marlo B., Andrew W., Henry B., Henry W., and Graham G. for their standout performances. Defensively, Yonni A., Hendrix B., Marlo B., and Nasir J. also delivered strong performances and helped lead the way.

Our team continues to grow, build confidence, and improve with every game. We're excited to carry this momentum into the final stretch of our season in November!

Last week our Crestview Rockets Flag Football team traveled to Thousand Oaks to play Carden Conejo in two games (10/16 and 10/20). During the first game our team could not perfect their RPO (Run-Pass-Option) offense with the opponent getting out to a 22-0 halftime lead. Our first half offense moved the ball some, but we were hampered with turnovers and miscues.

The second half was a better showing for us offensively and defensively. We limited our turnovers and made some great pass plays. Graham and Hendrix made great passes to our guys namely Henry W., Marlo, and Ethan getting on the board with a touchdown reception by Marlo and two point conversion from Henry B. We came up short 8-34 and left the game determined to play better in the next game.

The second game against Carden Conejo was a much better effort although we came up short in the end 18-22. The game started like each of the first three games, with us getting down early 22-0 with about ten minutes left in the first half. After gathering the team and challenging each and every player personally, the group rebounded. We shut down their offense with disciplined zone defense and got on the board two times before half time (Marlo touchdown pass from Graham and Hendrix catch and run for a score from Graham) and once more in the second half (Hendrix touchdown catch from Graham). We had two additional opportunities near their goal line in the second half to cut into their lead, but came away with no points.

We are extremely proud of the defensive effort and look forward to continuing our momentum into Monday's home game against CHIME School which will be played on our backfield beginning at 3:00 p.m.

We are off to a wonderful start of the school year in Environmental Science. Here is a peak inside what our lower elementary classrooms have been up to so far.

Our Kindergarteners have transformed into full-fledged garden detectives. We have been learning about what plants need to survive, how to put our 5 senses to work in the garden and a complete soil dissection! Students dug in dirt samples to carefully sift through soil in hopes of finding real earthworms. Coming up we will dive into the vital role these tiny wrigglers play in keeping our earth healthy.

First graders just wrapped up their first unit: "Surviving and Thriving!" Throughout this unit, students explored what living creatures truly need to survive, how they adapt to their environments, and made discoveries about diverse habitats. They took a deep dive into the beaver and its relationship with the willow tree to survive. To celebrate the end of our unit, students made beaver masks.

Second graders have been traveling through time to explore how California’s land has transformed over the generations. From unsettled wilderness to modern urban, suburban, and rural communities, students examined how humans interact with and alter the land around them. To bring these big concepts home, students engaged in small-group community-building games. Working collaboratively, they mapped out their own sprawling towns—balancing farm placement, road networks, and natural spaces to create thriving communities.

In third grade, the spotlight has been on life cycles. Students have been analyzing the critical need for safe shelter and how environmental factors directly impact an animal's ability to reproduce and thrive. We have dedicated special focus to the Monarch butterfly, tracing its remarkable journey and discussing the environmental challenges this delicate pollinator faces daily.

Our sports season is underway. Last week's, game was a tough one against Viewpoint School with the final score of 36-14. Our kids played hard and learned the importance of working together as a group. Today's game is certian to be a good one against Carden Conejo in Thousand Oaks. Thank you to Coach Julian and our athletes' parents for all their support. Here is to an great season!

It takes a village to read a novel! The sixth grade is engrossed in their reading of Lois Lowry’s The Giver. In Mrs. Savoie’s reading class, the students are debating the questions raised in the novel’s dystopian society. They are also tracking the main character, Jonas, on a Hero’s Journey throughout the novel. They will show their comprehension through a final project of their choosing. They may write a song, use their artistic skills to create a comic or use their analytical skills to portray the society of the novel using information learned in social studies. The end of the novel, in the past, has caused students to gasp and, literally, throw their books down. In Ms. Gunn’s writing class, they will have the chance to rewrite the ending to give the main character the ending they wanted to see. This dystopian society is based on the concept of “Sameness” which Mrs. Cregan is exploring in her design thinking class as the students make buildings to create the community from the novel. These cross curricular activities give the students deeper insight into their reading. We are looking forward to the finished projects.

Our 6th graders are diving into the fascinating world of the human microbiome! Using the Amplify Science curriculum, students have stepped into the role of student researchers working for the Microbiome Research Institute. They are investigating the trillions of microorganisms that live in and on the human body. Leading students to iscover how these microscopic communities can play an important role in our health.

To bring this microscopic world to life, students have also had the opportunity to use microscopes to get a closer look at microorganisms and experience what it’s like to investigate the unseen world like real scientists. Throughout the unit, students analyze evidence, examine data, investigate a fictional patient case, and develop explanations based on their findings. They are learning that bacteria and other microorganisms aren't simply “good” or “bad”—instead, they are part of complex ecosystems that interact with our bodies in fascinating ways.

Through this investigation, students are building important scientific skills while asking big questions, making observations, and using evidence to support their ideas. Who knew that one of the most fascinating ecosystems in the world could be found right inside us?
