Over the past 10 weeks, our Crestview 4th graders have been hard at work on a meaningful project that combined learning, creativity, and compassion. As part of their "Introduction to Service" unit, students explored a powerful question: What can we do for the common good? Then, they brainstormed themes they cared about, worked in teams, and ultimately voted to support a cause close to many of their hearts: helping animals in need.
From there, students explored various nonprofit websites, conducted partner research, and took notes using guided worksheets. Each team created a Google Slideshow to present their findings to the class, culminating in a final vote that led to choosing Best Friends Animal Society as their beneficiary.
Best Friends Animal Society is a national nonprofit dedicated to ending euthanasia in America’s shelters. Their mission is to ensure that every pet has a chance at a loving home, and their work includes animal rescue, adoption, advocacy, and education. The organization operates a sanctuary in Utah and has a regional center right here in Los Angeles.
With their cause selected, the students got to work! Each grade level in the school contributed handmade items to be sold at the 4th Grade Market, with 4th graders leading the charge. Not only did they create products, but they also handled public relations—making posters, visiting classrooms, giving presentations, and reading the heartfelt story Two Bobbies, which tells the tale of two animal friends who survived Hurricane Katrina together with the help of Best Friends Animal Society.
