Art

Creativity and appreciation for the arts are important features of a well-rounded education. In art class, students have abundant opportunities to explore and create art in various styles, learn from notable artists, and appreciate different cultures. Fourth grade students were introduced to the Mola folk art of Panama, and they each used the technique of metal embossing/repousse to create a Mola-inspired relief sculpture on metal. First, students received designs consisting of floral or animal images, and then they drew these designs on paper using the grid method. This drawing technique allowed fourth graders to break the larger design down into smaller, more-manageable segments, which helped with accuracy. They then transferred their drawings onto a foil sheet to create their own metal embossing/repousse relief. For the final step, students will apply color to their reliefs using permanent markers.
