Introduction to Writer’s Workshop: Narrative Writing

Let's get ready for the Writer's Workshop! Do you want your child to LOVE writing and write stories that will blow you away? That’s just what the Lucy Calkins writing units will do!  Rising 1st and 2nd grade students will spend two weeks exploring a variety of mentor texts and will write their very own narrative piece(s). They will learn how to focus their writing during a small part of the day and use a variety of writing crafts to elaborate and bring their writing to life! This introductory workshop will help your students feel comfortable and confident with their writing and help prepare them for the next school year.

Beginning Yoga with Ms. Troy (Grades 2-4) IN-PERSON

Join Ms. Troy this summer virtually and have fun with your friends learning various yoga poses. Use your imagination to incorporate different poses in stories about sea life, magic carpet rides and camel adventures through the desert. In addition to yoga poses, you'll learn some meditation and breathing strategies to help you relax and find peace. We'll also play yoga games and figure out riddles. Some days will be thematic where our poses and meditations are based on topics like Star Wars and sports. We'll even make up our own yoga poses.

Summer Reading Book Club and Creating Mini Writer's Notebook with Ms. Baker (4th Grade) VIRTUAL

What's summer without a lemonade stand? Together with your classmates and Ms. Baker, we'll read the required summer reading book, The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies. We'll cover chapter summaries, character traits, the setting of the story, the intense plot between a dueling brother and sister trying to outsell the other. You'll be ready to start the 4th grade year with the first book completed. In addition to reading, the students will be using a journal to create a summer writer's notebook that we will write in at the beginning of each class. The book will need to be purchased but all other supplies will be provided for the course.

Reader's theater is a strategy for developing reading fluency. It involves children in oral reading through reading parts in scripts. Reader's Theater offers an entertaining and engaging means of improving fluency and enhancing comprehension.
