Writer’s Workshop with Ms. Thai (Grades 1 - 2)  IN-PERSON

Introduction to Writer’s Workshop: Narrative Writing

Let's get ready for the Writer's Workshop! Do you want your child to LOVE writing and write stories that will blow you away? That’s just what the Lucy Calkins writing units will do!  Rising 1st and 2nd grade students will spend two weeks exploring a variety of mentor texts and will write their very own narrative piece(s). They will learn how to focus their writing during a small part of the day and use a variety of writing crafts to elaborate and bring their writing to life! This introductory workshop will help your students feel comfortable and confident with their writing and help prepare them for the next school year.

Come travel around the world with Ms. Pimentel and explore recipes from countries such as Brazil, Japan, Mexico and more. We will cook fun, delicious and healthy recipes while learning about the cuisine of the countries we visit. Students will learn to read recipes and become familiar with various culinary terms. **Family will need to provide all supplies**


Open a Book with Ms. Hage (Grades 1-3) VIRTUAL

Do you love reading? Do you want to learn about different genres of books? Join Ms. Hage on this reading quest! Each day will be dedicated to a particular book genre and there will be a focus book read as a daily adventure. Expand your horizons and grow an appreciation for books you may never have even picked up before!


Beginning Yoga with Ms. Troy (Grades 2-4) IN-PERSON

Join Ms. Troy this summer virtually and have fun with your friends learning various yoga poses. Use your imagination to incorporate different poses in stories about sea life, magic carpet rides and camel adventures through the desert. In addition to yoga poses, you'll learn some meditation and breathing strategies to help you relax and find peace. We'll also play yoga games and figure out riddles. Some days will be thematic where our poses and meditations are based on topics like Star Wars and sports. We'll even make up our own yoga poses. 


Summer Reading Book Club and Creating Mini Writer's Notebook with Ms. Baker (4th Grade) VIRTUAL

What's summer without a lemonade stand? Together with your classmates and Ms. Baker, we'll read the required summer reading book, The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies. We'll cover chapter summaries, character traits, the setting of the story, the intense plot between a dueling brother and sister trying to outsell the other. You'll be ready to start the 4th grade year with the first book completed. In addition to reading, the students will be using a journal to create a summer writer's notebook that we will write in at the beginning of each class. The book will need to be purchased but all other supplies will be provided for the course.

 

Literature Study of Let the Circle Be Unbroken with Mrs. Cregan (The Sequel to Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry) (6th Grade) IN-PERSON

Want to know what happens to T.J. and the Logan Family after the end of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry? Join Mrs. Cregan for a daily read-together and discussion zoom, then read on your own or watch a recorded lesson of chapters in between what we read together every day.

Under the Sea with Ms. Hage! (Grades 1-3) VIRTUAL

Dive under the deep ocean waves with Ms. Hage! Each day will be focused on a particular sea creature or group of animals. Ms. Hage will also share stories from her experience working with a variety of ocean friends. Come take the plunge and discover why the ocean is so “fintastic!” 

 

Reader’s Workshop with Ms. Thai (3rd Grade) IN-PERSON

Series Book Club and Reader’s Theater

When kids talk about books, the conversations can be invigorating, engaging, and enlightening. Students will learn how to engage in meaningful conversations with Ms.Thai and their peers as they learn about the development of the characters in the series. Students will become experts in the series that they are reading. They will then collaborate and create a character project on an iPad using a variety of apps. 

 

Reader's theater is a strategy for developing reading fluency. It involves children in oral reading through reading parts in scripts. Reader's Theater offers an entertaining and engaging means of improving fluency and enhancing comprehension. Students will read a variety of texts and will have the opportunity to write a skit to act it out. What a fun way to learn!

Literature Study of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry with Mrs. Cregan (5th Grade) IN-PERSON

Join Mrs. Cregan for reading and discussion of this powerful story about an African-American family in the South in the 1930s. Mrs. Cregan is rotating literature studies and won't be covering this in class this coming year, but you don't want to miss this story! Read and discuss in class, then read on your own or watch a recorded lesson of chapters in between what we read together every day. Reading this book with Mrs. Cregan this summer will fulfill one of your summer reading requirements for entering Fifth Grade.

 

Sculpey Mania with Ms. Troy (Grades 3-6) IN-PERSON

Do you like to be creative and invent your own creatures? If so, please join Ms. Troy and explore your imagination as we learn to manipulate sculpey clay. We'll create monsters, food, skateboards, cars and almost anything you can think of. We'll build multi-media habitats with magazines, shoeboxes and construction paper so our creations have a place to live. We’ll listen to stories that inspire our creative thinking and brainstorm with one another about our ideas. Join your friends and get lost in the imaginative world of sculpey. Parents will need to purchase sculpey and bake it in the oven after class.

Summer Scientists with Ms. Thai (Grades 1-2) IN-PERSON

Join me for fun experiments that you can eat, play with, or explore. We will be making everything from green slime, bouncy balls, and silly putty, to butter, pretzels, and gelatin gumdrops. We will also be doing some crafty experiments with plastic bottles and other supplies. Join me for a wild, wacky, and fun science class! **Family will need to provide all supplies.**

 

I Love Movies with Ms. Hage! (Grades 4-6) VIRTUAL

Do you love movies? Want to know more about the process of filmmaking? Join Ms. Hage on an adventure through film. You will learn the history of films, basics of what goes into making a movie, discuss films on the American Film Institute (AFI) list, and more. Get ready to say lights, camera, and action!

Are you ready to write your very own fiction book? Let your imagination and creativity come to life over the next two weeks. Scholars will come up with a creative story idea using either a story of their own or a prompt using the tools provided. They will need a computer device for the final draft.

 

Exploring Harry Potter with Ms. Pimentel (Grades 3-6) IN-PERSON

Come and explore the world of Harry Potter with Ms. Pimental! Students will be reading sections of the books and discussing what we read. Students will also create different artifacts from the Harry Potter world such as wands, pillows, and we will make a yummy potion.

 

History and Crafts with Mrs. Cregan (Grades 5-6) +$25 Materials Fee IN-PERSON

Make history come alive with projects from the past! Possible projects include making a thaumatrope (early optical toy), cross stitch sampler, covered wagon model, marble book cover, cornhusk doll, jumping jack toy, tin punching, wood carving, and more!

Join Ms. Thai this summer to engage in real-world, hands-on investigations! STEM incorporates science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Students will learn to work as team members while planning investigations, conducting experiments, and analyzing data. If building fast roller coasters and shelters to withstand natural disasters sounds fun, then STEM class is the place to be! **Family will need to provide all supplies**

Math Ready with Ms. Thai (Grades 2) IN-PERSON

A good math curriculum should teach much more than the “how-to” of simple arithmetic. It should help kids learn fundamental math concepts and skills, such as math facts, with complete scope and sequence. Students will spend the next two weeks with Ms. Thai sharpening their math skills. This is a perfect crash course to get your child ready for the next school year.

Directed Drawing and Bookmaking with Ms. Baker (Grades 1-3) VIRTUAL

Want to learn how to draw soft snuggle animals, your favorite foods like tacos and pizza, or Pokemon characters and unicorns? Using a step-by-step approach to drawing and coloring each piece, you'll learn to appreciate your own artistic ability this summer. At the end of our 2-week session, you'll make a book of your own creations and captions. What you'll need is a pencil, a sharpie, crayons or colored pencils, and a great attitude. Ms. Baker will supply the directed drawing journal.

Yoga with Ms. Mirabian (Grades K-3) IN-PERSON
Join Ms. Mirabian for the ultimate zen and fun yoga class. Each day, students will be learning new yoga moves, breathing exercises, and flowing our bodies to music. During the last 5-10 minutes of each class, students will be practicing mindfulness, journaling (drawing and writing) and meditating.
