Cultivating Creativity in Computer Science

Our upper elementary computer science classes have been buzzing with creativity and innovation as they have taken on exciting projects! Across all our classes, students have been using a combination of coding, generative AI, 3D design, and graphic design to bring their creative ideas to life and take their projects to the next level.

In 4th grade, students have been sharpening their coding skills and diving into the world of game design. Using block-based coding platforms like Scratch and Microsoft MakeCode, they have been hard at work developing their very own video games, complete with original characters, challenges, and storylines. It's been incredible to see their ideas come to life on the screen as they explore what it takes to build a fun and interactive game.

Meanwhile, our 5th graders have been collaborating in teams to create original video games with an added twist—they also designed and built working controllers to play their games! Using Makey Makey kits, students brought their creativity and problem-solving skills together to invent custom game controllers either out of everyday materials or an original 3D design print.  On top of that, they designed video game cover art and promotional posters to showcase their work. The combination of coding, engineering, and design turned their projects into fully immersive experiences that concluded in an “arcade day” in class!

In 6th grade, students are taking their design skills to the next level with 3D modeling in SketchUp. They have been tasked with creating their own theme parks, carefully planning and designing attractions, layouts, and park features. To showcase their work, students are also using Google Sites to build custom websites that highlight the unique features of their parks, including interactive maps, ride descriptions, and themed areas. This hands-on project not only strengthens their computer-aided design skills but also helps them prepare for their upcoming science project, Future City, where they will apply similar skills to design and build a model of a floating city. Students will collaborate using the design thinking process to brainstorm, plan, and create innovative solutions for the challenges of living on water.

It's been an exciting season of creativity, teamwork, and innovation in our computer science classes!
