First Grade

Happy National Poetry Month! To celebrate, our first graders writers have entered the enchanting world of poetry after a well-deserved spring break. Inspired by the work of Shel Silerstein, we started our new writing unit this week with sensory poems. Sensory poems help us showcase our blooming vocabulary by describing familiar objects and experiences using our five senses. Poetry also inspires us to use our imagination to create vivid images with words that make our writing come alive. Writing sensory poems helps us to develop our writing skills further as we learn to play with language and express our emotions in unique and artistic ways. The next stop on our journey will be a spring haiku followed by acrostic poems using our names.
