Science

In science this month, third and fourth grade students are investigating magnetism and electricity. The third graders began their study by exploring the interactions between magnets and various materials and surfaces. They were even able to pull off some magic tricks! They then ran an experiment to gather data on magnetic fields and attraction. Next, students will dive into discussions and explanations of force to answer the question, "What causes change of motion?"

The fourth graders began their study of electricity this month with a challenge. Students were tasked with lighting a flashlight bulb using only wires and D-cell batteries. Through this investigation students learned about electricity's pathway through a circuit and each of the system's components. They also explored the anatomy of a light bulb. Next, students were tasked with the challenge of powering a small motor using the same wires and D-cell batteries. With their new knowledge and understanding of creating circuits, the fourth graders will be diving into a new investigation where they create a new circuit to investigate how different materials conduct or insulate electricity.

The lessons learned in third grade are built upon in fourth as students will become reacquainted with magnets later in the year with a study in electromagnetism. Stay tuned!
