Crestview Preparatory School, an independent K-6 school located in La Canada Flintridge, is seeking a music specialist teacher for the 2020-21 school year.

Crestview’s goal is to provide a strong educational program within a positive and nurturing learning environment. Candidates must have a passion for teaching and believe in the potential of all students to learn and progress. The ideal candidate likes and relates well to children, has a sense of humor, and has strong writing and communication skills. This individual should be comfortable with creating a learning environment that is supportive by using a variety of instructional methods that address individual learning styles and integrates theory with hands-on classroom experience.

Music Specialist Teacher is responsible for teaching music education to students in grades K- 6th Grade and assists the staff of the school in the improvement and appreciation of music instruction. Helps students grow in their enjoyment, appreciation, and performance of music through a variety of planned music experiences which include singing, movement, playing instruments and listening. The position consists of the duties below:

Teaches general music to K-6th grade including harmony, appreciation, history, and ensemble.

Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of students.

Provides opportunities for music ensembles.

Plans, rehearses, and directs students in two musical programs for school and community (Winter and Spring Concerts).

Teaches sight reading through instrumentation using Recorder or Ukulele.

Directs student choir and orchestra programs before school.

Differentiate music curriculum to meet the needs of the individual student and the student body.

Plans a balanced music program, and organizes daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.

Develops and refines music curriculum based on NAfME’s standards of creating, performing, and responding.

Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during practice, group rehearsals, and music performances.

Evaluates each student’s musical growth and contribution to the performance of the group that allows everyone to contribute.

Communicates clearly with parents and school administration on the progress of individual students.

Maintains care/responsibility for school-owned music, musical instruments, and equipment to prevent loss or abuse.

Cooperation with Head of School and Director of Program and Innovation in providing musical programs for school assemblies, parent meetings and instrumental concerts.

This is a part-time position 4 days a week (32 hours).

Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Educational degree in music is required, teaching experience and musical background will be considered.Training in Orff, Kodaly or Dalcroze training required.

An ideal candidate will have at least three years of teaching experience in elementary.
